Adjustment to College
Learning to successfully balance work, school, and sometimes family can be extremely difficult and stressful for students. Assistance is provided for students to help them make the appropriate adjustments that are necessary for academic success.

To find out your learning style, make an appointment today to meet with an Educational Planning Specialist in the Student Support Center.
Orientation

Orientation to college includes: adjustment to college, NSCC resources, policies and procedures and one on one program and schedule building with an academic advisor. This includes registration for classes and activation of personal Campus Pipeline Account through online registration. This occurs after acceptance to the college and after the students completes proficiency testing or displays competency. The student will select his appointment time from a list which will be sent with the acceptance letter.
Specialized Courses
College Success Seminar
The College Success Seminar is a 3-credit open elective course designed to provide you with the skills, knowledge, and attitude necessary to be a successful college student. In addition to the topics listed below, the Seminar also includes ongoing, personalized academic advising to help you adjust to college smoothly and develop effective educational plans.
The seminar covers the following topics:
College: The meaning and value of "success" in our society; "Non-traditional" students in college; The community college in higher education; Adjusting to the college environment.
Skills: Communicating in the classroom; Time management; Managing and coping with stress; Effective decision-making.
Studying: Understanding teachers' expectations and styles; Listening and notetaking; Using textbooks; Studying and test-taking skills; Active reading and writing.
About Learning: Understanding how you learn; Thinking critically; Becoming a more creative thinker.
About Careers: Careers and career planning in our society; A model for career development; Personal career exploration and research; Creating your educational and career plans.
